Rajat Kapoor is famous face now in Bollywood. He has started his career as an actor in 1989 with Khayal Gatha. In 1994 he made his debut as director with Tarana. It was a flop, later many of his attempts as director failed.
In 2001 he has acted in Farhan Akhtar’s Dil Chahta Hai, it became a block buster and he was noticed by Bollywood audience and movie makers. Same year he has acted in Mira Nair’s Mosoon Wedding which was also a super hit movie. In Madhur Bhandarkar’s Corporate he has played the character with different shades.


But still he has thirst to become a top director. His previous movies Mithya and Mixed Doubles also failed to achieve success. Anurag Kashyap was the writer for Mixed Doubles.

Now Rajat is coming again to test his luck as director with the movie A Rectangular Love Story.

Zoya Akhtar is the sister to famous director Farhan Akhtar.Their father JavedAkhtar is a star screenplay writer, who has worked with famous directors like Yash Chopra.


Zoya has started her career as assistant director with Mira Nair’s Kama Sutra: The Tale Of Love. After this movie she has worked as assistant director to FarhanAkhtar for his the movies like Dil Chahta Hai and Don-The Chase Begins.


With Luck By Chance she made her debut as director in Bollywood. She is hoping to become one the notable female director like Mira Nair and Deepa Mehta Present she is busy in script work of Priyanka Chopra and Hrithik Roshan starer Kismat Talkies.

Mahesh Manjrekar has started his career as director later stepped towards action. With Kaante and Musafir he has bagged stardom, later he has acted in many super hit films. On the other hand he continued direction, but failed to achieve success. Present he is completely concentrated on action. In Oscaar winner Slumdog Millionaire also we have seen him in a key role.


Rajat Kapoor also Mahesh Manjreakar’s foot steps. Farhan Akhatar established Rajat Kapoor as good actor with his first movie Dil Chahta Hai. Mira Nair’s Mansoon Wedding and Madhur Bandarkar‘s Corporate gave him stardom. Present he is one of the lead actor in Bollywood.

Unlike western countries we have very less female directors in India. Deepa Mehta and Mira Nair are other only women took direction as profession, all the remaining ladies made one or two movies then give up to direction. But now many ladies coming out to direct movies.


Recently Farhan Akhtar‘s sister Zoya Akhtar came with the movie Luck By Chance. Aamir Khan‘s wife Kiran Rao is ready with a script to made her debut as director. She has worked as assistant director for Ashutosh Gowariker for the movies Lagaan and Swades.


Kiran and Zoya must stand as inspiration to other girls who has dream to become directors.

India’s presence on the international movie circuit has grown tenfold.  The Indian movie never had it so good and it’s largely owing to the Indian diaspora.


Mira Nair, based in New York,  is one director who has been there and done that.  She has to her credit movies like Salaam Bombay, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair. The response to the movie adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri‘s The Namesake was positive across the world.


Deepa Mehta who immigrated to Canada is another example of a thinking director. She has handled controversial issues adeptly. She’s brought to the cinema goers movies like 1947: Earth‘ which was about the Partition; Water about the widows in India and Fire about homosexuality.

Both the ladies have used Bollywood actors as well as international stars like Reese Witherspoon and Naveen Andrews.


On the other hand, M Night Shymalan, who was born in Pondicherry and grew up in Philadelphia, has worked with some of the biggest Hollywood stars like Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. M Night Shyamalan’s movies belong to the supernatural and thriller genres. His movies like The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village open to an internationaal audience.

Sooni Taraporevala turned to direction with the movie Litle Zizou. She is well known to us as screenplay writer, Oscar nominated Salam Bombay came from her pen only. Well known director Mira Nair is best friend to Sooni. Soooni wrote scripts for Mira Nair films.
Salaam Bombay, Mississippe Masala
and The Name Sake came from this Sooni- Mira combination only. Like Mira Nair, she also did her first movie without any big stars. It was a comedy movie about a small boy who loves France foot ball player Zinedine Zidaan very much.
John Abraham gave a cameo appearance in this movie. Little Zizou did average at Box Office, but Sooni received praises from all the viewers.

Mira Nair went to Oscars with her first film Salam Bombay. Mira’s every film is a sensation. Her concepts mostly revolve around facts and problems. She mostly works with her best friend Sooni Taraporevala‘s scripts. She has been working mostly for international projects but has never forgot Bollywood. Monsoon Wedding (2001) is her second movie in India after Salam Bombay (1988).

mm1991fce0Mira was born in Rourkela, Orissa. She did her schooling in Shimla and went to Delhi unversity for higher education. There she joined theatre arts. With the scholarship from Harvard unversity she went to U.S.A. There only she met Sooni and a photo grapher Metch Epstein. Later she married Metch. There she started working for documentaries.

Her documentary India Cabret won award in the American Film festival. Then she returned back to India and worked for Salam Bombay. This movie went to many international film festivals and got official entry for the Oscars. At the Cannes film festival she won the Golden Camera award. Recently she directed The Namesake.
Mississippi  Masala is her another good movie which deals about Indian-Americans and African-Americans.  Her movie Kamasutra : A Tale Of Love became controversial for the name and was not released in India.
