India’s presence on the international movie circuit has grown tenfold.  The Indian movie never had it so good and it’s largely owing to the Indian diaspora.


Mira Nair, based in New York,  is one director who has been there and done that.  She has to her credit movies like Salaam Bombay, Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love, Monsoon Wedding and Vanity Fair. The response to the movie adaptation of Jhumpa Lahiri‘s The Namesake was positive across the world.


Deepa Mehta who immigrated to Canada is another example of a thinking director. She has handled controversial issues adeptly. She’s brought to the cinema goers movies like 1947: Earth‘ which was about the Partition; Water about the widows in India and Fire about homosexuality.

Both the ladies have used Bollywood actors as well as international stars like Reese Witherspoon and Naveen Andrews.


On the other hand, M Night Shymalan, who was born in Pondicherry and grew up in Philadelphia, has worked with some of the biggest Hollywood stars like Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson and Sigourney Weaver. M Night Shyamalan’s movies belong to the supernatural and thriller genres. His movies like The Sixth Sense, Signs and The Village open to an internationaal audience.
