Ashutosh Gowarikar is one of the director whose movie went to the Oscar finals. He is basically from Maharashtra and started his film career at  an early age in 1984 when he was just 20 years old. He began his career as an actor and acted in many Hindi films and television programs.
Later turned into director with the film Pehla Nasha in 1993, which was a failure. After two years he released another movie Baazi. It was also unsuccessful. After directing Baazi, he took a long gap of 6 years for his next film, but he created history with the movie Lagaan in 2001.

He gave confidence to Bollywood film makers by getting many international awards and rewards for Lagaan, because of which Bollywood movies got exposure in the world wide market. He never cares about money and time, he aims for a good outcome.  For the movie Jodha Akbar he spent months in library to learn about Mughal costumes.

Though he has been a director for 16 years he has directed only 5 movies, but each time he makes a movie he gives his best to it. Patritism was the theme in Lagaan set in a village in the British period. The villagers are suffering with the tax problems at the hands of the British. The villagers fight the British in a different way by playing cricket.

Swades was his fourth movie with Shahrukh Khan in the lead role. This movie was not a good success at the box office but was touching story about an employee in Nasa who sacrifices his job to change the Indian society. Ashutosh took care of the production part of this movie.
Jodha Akbar once again showed Ashuthosh’s dedication, hard work and talent. The story was about the great Mughal emperor Akbar. The story mostly revolves around how Akbar respected all religions and is a love story between  Akbar and a Hindu princess Jodha. Even Hollywood directors were impressed watching this movie.

His early movies Baazi and Pehla Nasha were also good concepts. As a result of his lack of experience in directing movies he could not turn them into a success. His next movie What’s Your Raashee? is in production.

He has so far won dozens of national and international awards. His  dream is to win an Oscar. We hope it comes to true.
